Unfolding Neurological and Neuropsychiatric
Complications due to Covid-19

Approach

The Covid-19 pandemic has imminently shown that the integration of different stakeholders and approaches from the beginning of a science project is critical to tackling global medical challenges effectively.

The transdisciplinary consortium of NeuroCOV will thus apply a layered methodology and combine expertise from different fields, ranging from epidemiology and molecular biology to Artificial Intelligence and social sciences.

With the aim of addressing the involvement of the immune system and the direct loss of neuronal functions following Covid-19 infections, NeuroCOV will carry out clinical and observational studies on different cohorts from different European countries. To ensure maximum precision in the epidemiological objectives of the project, host genetic make-up, comorbidities, socioeconomic status, immune status, disease courses, and high-resolution molecular profiles of blood samples will be analysed concurrently within an innovative research framework. Furthermore, the project will harness the most advanced Artificial Intelligence algorithms to identify relevant biological markers for NeuroCOVID, predict risk factors and convert patient characteristics into decision supports for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.

In parallel to all the clinical activities aimed at identifying medical treatments, the project will envisage qualitative social science research to investigate key social aspects of NeuroCOVID. Through active engagement with the Post-COVID community, NeuroCOV will focus on issues such as social stigma, discrimination, and privacy to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences and social predicaments faced throughout the pandemic by NeuroCOVID patients.

The comprehensive approach of NeuroCOVID is expected to lead to actionable results on the medical, technological, and social levels.
